“The essence of Geology lies in Mineralogy, Petrology and Structural Geology. A symbol to represent anything geologic would be best formulated with a combination of these ingredients.”
Institute of Geology, Sri Lanka (IGSL) is empowered by the Parliamentary Act No. 03 of 2014 as the institution that governs all aspects connected with the practice of Geology as a profession. Therefore its emblem should be a unique representation of its geological affiliation. Simplicity and ease of reproduction should be integrated features of the logo when its anticipated uses are concerned.
Geological Interpretation
The essence of Geology lies in Mineralogy, Petrology and Structural Geology. A symbol to represent anything geologic would be best formulated with a combination of these ingredients.
The pattern presented in the logo is a conceptualized schematic illustration of an augen gneiss. It represents the highly deformed nature of metamorphic suite of rocks and is indicative of the prominent lithotectonic characteristics of Sri Lankan terrain.
Gneissic appearance with alternating colour bands represents the major lithological group that constitutes the Sri Lankan metamorphic crust. White lines show the foliation planes with rotated sigmoidal porphyroclasts trailing into the foliation. This sheared nature indicates the intense deformation the Sri Lankan metamorphic rocks have undergone. NE-SW orientation of the lines corresponds to the general trend of the rock bands of the Sri Lankan Precambrian crust.
Interpretation in IGSL Context
IGSL is the body that regulates, maintains and upholds the professional and ethical principles and standards in all matters connected with the practice of Geology. Therefore its logo should represent the characters of unambiguousness, straightforwardness, righteousness and transparency. The straight white lines standing out clearly from the plain background characterize these features.
The isometric shape of the enclosure is symbolic of the impartiality of IGSL. The two-fold symmetry of the figure represents the two major functions of the IGSL; to promote knowledge dissemination relating to Geology and to maintain the ethical standards of the practice of Geology.
The “augens” indicate IGSL’s vision of upholding the professional standards of geologists with constant vigilance on the local and global developments, and promoting geological knowledge acquisition and dissemination.
